In the Center of the City.

2.70/5.0
We traveled with a small dog and this is one of the few animal friendly places, that is very good. the location is very good, is in the center with a lot of coffee shops and restaurants nearby.
The Hotel is located on front of a very busy street, a lot of traffic until very late at night and start very early in the morning.

Great budget-friendly hostel for a young couple or group of friends

3.55/5.0
The place was close to restaurants and other amenities. The staff were very friendly and were able to accommodate our requests for switching rooms and adding another bed into the bedroom. Breakfast was pretty good, and there was a water filter near the reception where we could fill up our bottles with fresh water. The price we paid ($10 each per night) was great value for what we got.
The coffee wasn't great - as we were in Matagalpa, which is the coffee-growing part of Nicaragua, we thought we would be served better coffee at the hotel. There was no A/C, just one fan in our room, so it was quite hot.

The staff was great!

3.75/5.0
The staff was great! Always friendly and helpful. The view was gorgeous and you couldn't beat the view. I suggest heading to the air conditioned cafe down the hill.
The staff didn't speak any english, even though it was advertised. My toilet and sink both leaked onto the bathroom floor.

Good bed, clean room, great view, a lot of light, nice balcony, friendly and flexible staff, good location
The shower drain has a very weird smell coming from it. It's not nice entering a stinky room after a day.

You Get What You Pay For

2.50/5.0
The front desk staff were extremely helpful and pleasant.
Our first assigned room was so noisy (someone literally repairing and revving a motor bike directly under our window), that we had to request a room change the following day. Some of the glass slats were missing from the window as well and you could also smell the gas from the bike. There was no one at the desk during the evening and our TV had no remote and the volume kept getting louder -- hung around the desk until we were finally assisted by a young man (was a husband of one of the desk staff) who was not happy we had interrupted him and made that clear as he finally did something to the TV to silence it.

Small basic room.

2.10/5.0
It was cheap. Mostly you get what you pay for. When I travel I look for the exceptions to this rule. Hotel El Castillo was no exception.
It's very vertical. Lots of steps. My wife had recently injured her ankle in a fall so the steps were a problem. The breakfast was free but very basic, scrambeled eggs, rice and beans and white bread toast. At my wife's recommendation I chose not to have the coffee. Our room was small and basic, one light over head, no bedside table or lights, the bed was comfy, the shower warmish but there was no place to put the soap but the sink. The real problem was the smell. A moldy soapy smell that emanated from the bathroom. We never got used to it and left the next morning.

Reservé una habitación con balcón y me dieron una habitación que no tenía vista a ningún lado y a la orilla de la calle, las camas incómodas y no muy buena limpieza. Bien para viajeros que piensan compartir habitación y bajar gastos.

Not a good experience, but nice personnel.

2.90/5.0
Friendly personnel! Nice common balcony/terrace as well.
We did not get the room with balcony we reserved but a dark back room, the matrasses were not great and we had a cockroach in the room. We were allowed to switch to a room at the street side thanks to the very friendly receptionist, but unfortunately the window there was broken so the noise of the street was extremely loud, as cars and heavy trucks passed by during the whole night.

Perfect place in central Matagalpa!

4.80/5.0
This is the best place we have stayed in Nicaragua so far! Overall hotel and rooms are very clean, shower has hot water which is luxury here, location is perfect, a few minutes from the Cathedral and Parque Central. We payed a few dollars more for the room with balcony and it was so worth it! Magnificient views over the city and sunset at night. Definitely recommend this place for its value for money!
Nothing much, though we didn't take the breakfast as it seemed a bit overpriced (2$) compared to the local restaurants around the hotel
