Happy days in Mendocino

5.00/5.0
This is quirky little place, with accommodation in individual buildings including a tower. It is a historical building, hence the really nice atmosphere about the place. Humming birds can be seen in the lovely flowers on the site. A brief walk will take you to the centre of Mendocino. Breakfast is served at a large table in the morning where you get a chance to speak to the other guests staying there. This was a particularly nice way to start the day. However, the best part was the Inn's owners, what a lovely helpful and friendly couple. I would certainly recommend staying at the Inn.

Quintessential Victorian B&B

4.80/5.0
This beautiful old B&B is painstakingly taken care of and immaculate throughout. Our room had a wonderful poster bed and a new modern bathroom with separate shower and jet tub. Breakfast was served in the dining room of this multi-building B&B, where you get to meet and talk with many interesting travelers. Though the quiche was somewhat bland, the rest of the morning offerings were quite good and filling. You are within easy walking distance of downtown Mendocino and all of the shops.
Though not unbearable, we could hear the traffic from nearby State Route 1 at night.

Not what I expected for the price

2.70/5.0
The owners were nice and they tried really hard. The bed was comfortable
I guess I'm not a B&B kind of girl. For the price, I expected the 100+ year old house to be well restored but was run down in a lot of areas. The grounds were really neglected. In the nautical room, I was unable to view myself in the bathroom mirror because it was attached to the angled low ceiling. Also, there is no way to easily plug-in a cell phone anywhere in the room. It would've been nice to have an outlet near the night stands. The advertised fireplace was a small plug-in one operated with a remote control.

Egg dishes were fresh and tasty. Location was quiet despite proximity to road. Grounds beautiful with bountiful flowers and plant variety. Room comfortable. Early coffee and water was nice touch. Sufficient parking close to rooms. Walking distance to various options in town
Coffee (Folgers) inconsistent with Mendocino image of boutique, organic coffee roasters. Potatoes seemed processed.

We had the Library room which was very nice with two windows that resulted in a bright airy feeling.

Connect with the Mendocino of Old

4.80/5.0
This inn is a gem: the former house of Mendocino's first Banker, Joshua Grindle, dating from the 1880's , its like stepping into the past. Perched at the top end of the town, but only a couple of hundred yards from Main Street, he was certainly lord of all he surveyed. Lindsey and Jeff have recently taken it over - a warm welcome, social communal breakfast, and whilst the rooms preserve the décor and furnishings of the past they have all mod cons. Stay here and you will feel that you are re-living the frontier days
Nothing really.

Room was quite and centrally located for what we wanted. The morning breakfast was great. Easy to find. The owners were above great. Easy to like.
The Wi-Fi signal didn't make it into our room. We had to either go out on the porch or a little corner by the door that had some signal. Who doesn't need internet these days?

A wonderful getaway place. A perfect weekend.

5.00/5.0
The property is beautiful and well maintained, set back up on a hill above town, but it is an easy walk as the entire town is right there. The fact that they had spacious parking on site is very convenient. We walked around and noticed that many places had no parking on the property so you would have to chance finding a spot on the street. The room was cozy and well appointed and the owners, who are the staff, are a wonderful couple who make excellent food and were very helpful. It was a great experience altogether. We will be returning to this place.
We didn't want to leave.

A place to return to, time and again.

I have stayed in many Mendocino B&B's over the years. This lovely and welcoming place is surely a cut above. On a rainy weekend, I valued the personal warmth, the interesting and helpful conversation with the innkeepers, and the delicious gourmet breakfasts. I will return and recommend to friends.
No complaints...

Staff was friendly and flexible, breakfast was cooked opposed to the usual continental.
The only bad thing is the bathroom was super cold which made using the toilet more than a little uncomfortable.

Good Value , Incredible Breakfasts and gracious hosts

3.95/5.0
Owners were great. Only detraction was occasional road noise. Other B&Bs in town are perhaps prettier, they don't provide value or incredible breakfasts that Josh Grindle does.
We found 9:00a breakfast time to somewhat delay our start of day.

UPDATE AUGUST 2015.New owners Jeff and Lindsey are off to a very good start. Our room (Tower 1) was perfect and spotless. Generous fresh cooked breakfasts offering bacon, eggs, yogurt, granola, juices, coffee, muffins, etc. Lindsey makes a great quiche. Grounds were full of blooming flowers thanks to Glenna. The intro rate for the reopening offers a great value ($169 weekday $199 weekends) so come soon before they are raised. On site parking is a big plus, almost no other inns in Mendocino have that convenient benefit. Free bottled water. Complimentary cookies and assorted teas in the cozy parlor 24/7. Lovely property. Gracious hospitable innkeepers. We will come again for sure. *****************************************************************************************************************We have been coming to the Joshua Grindle Inn for twelve years and it never ever disappoints. I've been to other very nice north coast inns but the Joshua Grindle is truly the best. Charles and Cindy, the owners, sincerely want all their guests to have a wonderful stay and they work hard to achieve that goal. Our last visit was last weekend. Foggy mornings gave way to warm sunny days as they usually do this time of year. Once we headed to Mendocino to celebrate New Years with daunting forecasts of rain. Just as in prior years, the rain was intermittent and finally ceased giving us glorious sunny days and crystal clear winter ocean views. Take the hike from Cleone Lake to Ten Mile River. It's a ten mile round trip beach walk. If you tire you can just turn around at any point. We love the seemingly endless stretch of beach and crashing waves. We've made this hike nearly every time we visit the area. On one trip, we saw dozens of whales spouting close to shore. On another, we had a big curious river otter cruise by us time and again as we ate our lunch on the bank of Ten Mile River near the mouth. There are many other great hikes in the area and the innkeepers can guide you to all of them. The Pygmy Forest in quite unique, is free and is a very easy hike. The room was, as always, spotless and lovely. There are always nice little touches. A complimentary half bottle of good wine and a wood stove already stoked with logs and kindling greeted us. Internet WiFi had always been a bit spotty in the tower rooms but this time it was rock solid and FAST. Charles, ever the perfectionist, had invested in an upgraded mesh capable repeater router and it performed flawlessly.Cindy and Charles are pros who care. When they ask you about your stay it isn't just idle conversation. They take note of guest comments. If something needs attention they tend to it. They also stay on top of things. They don't let mattresses get saggy before they replace them. They don't wait for sheets and towels to fray before getting new ones. They care and it shows on every visit. Guests can visit the Parlor anytime day or night and it's always stocked with complimentary home baked cookies, a nice tea assortment, hot water and even some desert wine. It's a great place to read or just unwind. Ample on site parking is a bigger deal than you might imagine. I prefer walking a few steps to my car to retrieve a forgotten item rather than trekking a block. The delicious breakfasts are legendary, just read any of the reviews. The facility is charming and very well maintained. There are lots of charming inns in Mendocino however. What keeps us coming back is the warm and gracious hospitality. It is unique: genuine, non intrusive and personal. The owners make your satisfaction their goal, every day, every stay. You just can't make a better choice for a B&B in Mendocino or the whole North Coast for that matter. If this is your first visit the choice is simple. After that you'll come back based on the great stay you had. It's no surprise that the majority of the guests here are returning guests. It's a very romantic place too.

Joshua Grindle Inn epitomizes everything about the B&B experience. From a warm welcome, to caring and helpful conversation, to the most effective "concierge service", the attention to the guests is truly extraordinary. It is well maintained, clean and well run by people who truly care. The room was well equipped and so comfortable it was hard to leave. We enjoyed the walking distance to the restaurants and the water.

We have been traveling to CA every year for the past 30 years to escape the Northeast winter and for 28 years we have spent 3 or 4 days in Mendocino. We can't imagine staying anywhere but the Joshua Grindle Inn! Charles and Cindy are the perfect innkeepers - warm, friendly and full of suggestions for things to do and places to eat. They are also consummate professionals. The historic inn with its surrounding gardens is beautifully maintained, the rooms are immaculate, the breakfasts are fabulous and then there are the little touches - a welcome bottle of wine, high end toiletries, cookies and sherry in the afternoon, guidebooks and games in the parlor, and a refrigerator for guests to use in the back.Once you are there you really don't even need a car. It's a three block walk into town with its shops, galleries, restaurants and theater and an easy walk around the Headlands where, depending on the season, you can watch the whales go by. I cannot recommend this inn too highly - it's a real treasure!!

All the staff at Joshua Grindle Inn are fabulous and make you feel right at home. They are extremely knowledgeable about the area (I think Cindy said that they had lived there for about 17 years), and aren't afraid to give their honest opinions on what is actually fun to do there. My parents and I took a vacation to celebrate my dad's birthday. They were in one of the Cypress rooms and I was in the Meadow View room. The Cypress room was spacious but cozy. Queen bed, gas fireplace and a gorgeous bathroom with a soaking tub with jets and a separate shower. The Meadow View room was a little bit smaller, but just as lovely. I think the best part of both room was the attention to detail, down to a small towel by the coffee maker in case of any spills.Cindy and Charles make breakfast every morning, which made us feel so special. Some of the breakfast items we had were artichoke souffle, homemade waffles with bananas, and sausage made from scratch. Joshua Grindle Inn is not located right in the main area of town (like some of the other inns), but the downtown area is so small that it is really only a 5 minute walk (if that) to get into the main hub. If you're looking for a quiet home away from home while you are in Mendocino, this is it. Thank you for your hospitality!

My girlfriend and I thoroughly enjoyed our two night stay at Joshua Grindle. Our room, South Cypress, had that Victorian charm with a fireplace, rocking chair, and modern bathroom to boot. The breakfast was delicious, and we got great suggestions from Cindy on things to do in Mendocino. The Inn is walking distance to downtown yet you still definitely feel like you're out in the country. Two thumbs up!

We had the privilege of staying two nights at the Joshua Grindle Inn recently as part of a holiday where we stayed at a number of top hotels. There wasn't a flat screen TV with satellite channels and DVD or mini-bar or gymn facilities but there was a very warm welcome from Christine then an equally warm welcome from the proprietors at breakfast and a complimentary bottle of wine. There was a room with that homely feel situated a short walk from a beautiful part of the coast. There was a comprehensive breakfast that was the best that mum could cook and guides to the area from viewing gray whales migrating to wine-tasting to dinner with smooth jazz. Thank you.

My husband and I visited the Joshua Grindle Inn for our anniversary last year. We arrived to find a lovely (shared) parlor, complete with sherry to enjoy, and in our private room a nice bottle of merlot. The bed was comfortable, the room nicely decorated and the whole inn was very cozy and inviting. In the morning we enjoyed breakfast on the wrap-around porch and got lots of advice on what to check out in the area. The food was freshly prepared and delicious and the hosts very gracious. Joshua Grindle Inn is everything a bed and breakfast should be! Thank you for a wonderful and relaxing anniversary weekend!

Over the years, my wife and I have been going to Mendocino for our anniversary. Once we tried the Joshua Grindle Inn, it became our destination of choice. My most recent visit was this last week with my father and younger brother. The Inn provided the perfect atmosphere for the three of us to unwind and reminisce. Charles and Cindy are the penultimate hosts: from reserving a restaurant table for us each evening, to providing a delicious breakfast in the morning and cookies in the afternoon, they looked after our needs and allowed us to relax. At the close of our visit, my father resolved to bring my mother for a stay and my brother, his wife. Both are experienced, cosmopolitan travelers; now the allure of the North Coast and the ambiance of Joshua Grindle have captured them.

We had a great time at Joshua Grindle Inn in Mendocino last weekend. After realizing that we had planned our lovely bucolic weekend when the San Francisco Giants were playing in the World Series, we were lamenting the incredible lack of television sets in Mendocino and our hosts, Cindy and Charles, knocked themselves out trying to rectify the situation. They somehow managed to jerry rig a radio connection in the inn’s parlor so we were able to cheer on the home team with our regular announcers. Who needs TV?!We have stayed at this B&B a number of times over the years and highly recommend it. We were enjoying our delicious breakfast on the sunny deck as a four point deer waltzed by. Cindy even thought to provide straw hats for those without as it was a beautiful warm sunny day in Mendocino. Talk about a full service establishment! To top it all off, there is a first rate masseuse on the premises. Kudos to Glenna as well.Carol & Barry Livingston
