No Bacon for breakfast

3.75/5.0
The room was great and the bed extremely comfortable. Staff were really good too
We didn't realise that the hotel was vegetarian only. The blurb specified that the vegetarian food was very good, but didn't actually mention that there was only veg food. The disappointment of being faced with 'grilled tofu with tomato' on Sunday morning when you are really looking forward to egg and bacon was devastating. We paid £176 for the room so naturally disappointed considering what we paid. The sausage we ordered was not good...dry as a bone.

gone downhill

3.75/5.0
has gone downhill in terms of quality of food compared with earlier visits and its status as vegetarian is now hidden which means that people book who are expecting meat/fish, and far worse vegetarians are not likely to find it

Authentic but expensive and damp

3.35/5.0
Breakfast was delicious, staff were lovely, location idyllic, very relaxed, unobtrusive atmosphere.
Room was cold and very damp, felt very expensive for what it is.

Loveliness encapsulated.

I loved the location we got up and walked in the glorious surrounding fells. It's vegetarian so extra points for that. The staff and management are friendly but never in your face. Just great.
Nothing I can add will improve this hotel. It's superb.

Location location location

4.40/5.0
This is a great hotel for those who want to be far from the madding crowd. The location is perfect for easy access directly in to helm crag. The views are magnificent and a true gem of a hotel. The food is suitable for vegetarian and non- veggies. All in all a great place to de-stress. What it lacks in 5* oppulance it makes up for in character, location and stunning views.
Some things were maybe a little warn but it probably added to the character of this charming building

A wonderful option in the Lake District

4.80/5.0
I don't know how this place initially slipped under our radar. As a young couple looking for a quiet but modern option in the Lake District, this place was perfect. The hotel is secluded but only about 20 minutes from Windermere and is wonderful. Despite the photos on some websites, the rooms have recently been renovated and are stylish and comfortable. The bathrooms are fully equipped with nice tubs. There is wonderful walking straight out of the hotel door. The walk up to the lake on the way to Easdale was the perfect way to spend a few hours. My favorite was the kitchen: it is entirely vegetarian and delicious. I had fabulous risotto and a roasted cauliflower head that I am desperately trying to recreate at home. The food was such a welcome change from the stodgy pub food of the area. Finally, the staff was excellent and very helpful when our plans changed (we liked the first night so much, we stayed a second).
While it was a better value than many of the places in the area, I wish it were a bit cheaper, both hotel and food.

Very poor communication from staff

2.90/5.0
Room was comfortable however needed updating. Was not far from centre of grasmere and near some good walks.
The hotel shut the front door at 11 pm which we were not told about so when we arrived home from a night out at 1230 we had to knock loudly on the door to wake staff up who were asleep. Staff knew we were going into town but did not communicate to us that the door shut . Very poor communication and if the person who opened the door hadn't woke up to us knocking loudly it could have worked out very differently. We were told no information about the time of breakfast on arrival or how dark with no lighting the road down to the hotel was very dangerous with no light at night. Again we told staff we were going into town but they failed to tell us some important issues. There was also mold in the room.

Beautiful location but too expensive

3.75/5.0
Absolutely quiet, wonderful views, characterful location. Great as a home base for walks in the area.
Shower desperately needs renovating (and is due for it I am told during check-out); on a closer look parts of the house could benefit from a renovation; overall I had the impression to be paying for location more than service and standard of the hotel

Utterly peaceful unpretentious hotel in an ideal spot for walkers.

4.40/5.0
We liked the peace, the lovely garden, the un-fussy atmosphere, the delicious choice of dishes - tofu tempura with coastal greens was yummy, as was the breakfast burger (full of flavour). We are not vegetarian but really enjoyed the food here, with its subtle flavours. We travelled by train and bus. The one-mile walk from Grasmere is no problem and it has variations, so we always ended up in the village for afternoon tea then ambled back happily to Lancrigg.
One weekend breakfast time was unexpectedly busy with all guests appearing at once. The staff didn't seem to have a strategy for dealing with it so it was a bit disorganised and slow. Having said that, every member of staff was extremely nice and helpful.

Hotel served it's purpose providing accommodation for an additional night

3.15/5.0
Stunning view from front of hotel. Appears to be a great location for starting walks.
Whilst Grasmere post code, too far from centre, not walkable. Room was very disappointing, up narrow stairs, bathroom on different level from bedroom. View was poor. The fact that the hotel is vegetarian should be more prominent on Booking.com, on checking out was advised that other travellers had missed the fact. Not a major problem to us as we did not eat there
